DAVID ATTENBOROUGH !! WITH SOME NATIVE PAPUA NEW GUINEAN CHILDREN

Pic was taken on a trek to the smoked bodies of Aseki from Lae Papua New Guinea- through the lands of formerly cannibalistic tribes of the Highlands of PNG. Peter reminded me so much of David Attenborough on this day- even making his distinctive bird calling hilarious for these children. I told him about Kuru-where people die with a smile on their face- rtight up until 2009. The Anga people live in Papua New Guinea's Aseki District, a fringe highland region so detached from the modern world that even the regular passing of mist is considered an omen from the spirits. They're also heirs to one of the most bizarre rituals of the ancient world: the smoking of their ancestors' corpses.
