Memories of Peter Wright at Bickley Hall- By Larry Culliford

1958 September - 1962 June

Created by Howard one year ago

Bill Macfarlane has kindly passed on to me the details of Peter's funeral arrangements, and I am planning to attend the church service at St Margaret's in Warnham next Tuesday.

Peter and his brother David were both my teachers at Bickley Hall. I was there from September 1958 until summer 1962 when it closed. As I remember it, David taught maths and Peter originally taught French, but David left the school fairly soon. Peter Evison was hired to teach French, and Peter W switched to teaching maths. Both brothers made a big impression on me, age 8 and boarding away from home for the first time. They both seemed kind, cheerful and concerned for our wellbeing. It was that kind of school; and it seems no coincidence that French and maths were subjects I came to do well in.
My friend Adrian Barralet, who I met at the school and who now lives in Scotland, also remembers Peter with fondness. Peter once wrote a hilarious song immortalising 'Barralet and Foate', two boys constantly getting themselves in trouble at school. I wish I still had a copy of the words.

I am attaching some photos I took at Bickley Hall showing Peter. Three depict a sunny Sunday evening relaxation with music led by the two Peters and a couple of other teachers. Happy Days!

Although the school closed in 1962,  reunions continue to this day. It is sad, though, that we instantly lost touch with each other and with those special teachers. I went to another Prep school for a year then to Cranleigh, and from there to Cambridge and Guys Hospital to become a doctor, using my qualifications later to travel to New Zealand and Australia for a number of years, eventually becoming a psychiatrist back home in Brighton. I have lived here in Steyning since 1988, and wish I'd known that Peter was so close by. I would certainly have paid him a visit. As it is, at least I will get to bid him farewell and pay my respects.
I'd be happy for the photos to go up on the memorial website, by the way, if you can arrange that.
With best wishes,
Larry
